“One woman made two burning candles. Another a really beautiful cross, very complicated. A Holy Jerusalem cross. Another woman made her husband, sitting in a really comfortable chair,, watching television. Someone else made a dog that had bitten him,” Ms. Howland said, adding that the seniors’ work will be exhibited at Sperryville’s Springfest this weekend.
It was her first workshop for the elderly. Like all beginning artists, they had inhibitions, insisting “Oh, I can’t do this! I can’t make a face,” Ms. Howland recalled. “But old people know a lot more than we do. They have so much more experience to draw on. I had to pull that experience out.”
