Scrabble landowners railed about trash and dogs and attorneys accused the Planning Commission of inconsistency and illegality and castigated the Board of Supervisors for poor business judgment at a public hearing last Wednesday on zoning amendments related to a county animal shelter.
After three hours, the upshot was:
• A split vote by the Planning Commission on a recommendation to allow animal shelters by special use permit in an agricultural district.
• A recommended denial on a zoning amendment to decrease rear set - back distance from 75 to 50 feet.
• A majority finding that permitting animal shelters in an agricultural zone substantially complies with provisions of the county’s comprehensive plan.
The county faces a legal challenge from the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies over its failure to provide an animal shelter that meets state standards. A hearing on the suit — filed in 1984 and held in abeyance to give the county an opportunity for voluntary compliance — is set for July 11.
