SKIP GILES (front, left) of Washington was among 68 Boy Scouts and eight leaders who returned August 1 from a two week expedition to Philmont Scout-Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. In addition to earning “50-miler” awards during a week-long backpacking trek in the Sangre de Cristo Range, the scouts panned for gold, rode horses, and learned rock climbing and rappelling techniques. The other scouts were from Luray, New Market and Woodstock. Their leader was George Shanks (middle, right) from Luray.
