More Rappahannock donkeys can be found at the Blackwater Creek property of Jim and Nan Thomasson.
“These are the standard donkeys, not the mammoths,” said Nan. “They’re mentioned in the Bible as the beasts of burden with the cross on the back.”
The Thomassons, who are building a home on their property near Boston, originally wanted the donkeys to haul logs out of the woods when construction started. Another objective was to keep the meadow clear.
“They haven’t done too well at that,” said Mr. Thomasson. “They’ll eat weeds if we pull them up first. And they don’t like honeysuckle.”
