Governor Gerald L. Baliles and Attorney General Mary Sue Terry announced recently that the remaining proceeds from a successful antitrust litigation against certain national chicken producers will be given to the Department for the Aging for using in home meal distribution programs (Meals on Wheels).
The money, totaling $5,128.16, is the final distribution in a settlement agreed to which brought the state a total of $100,533.28. The presiding judge in the case recently ordered that the final distribution could go to support a public food program, as an alternative to allocation among state agencies.
Because the money would otherwise have had to be distributed among 124 agencies, Governor Baliles agreed to Attorney General Terry’s recommendation to distribute the funds to meals on wheels programs through the State Department for the Aging. These programs provide lunches and dinners to persons, primarily the elderly and the ill, living at home who are unable to prepare their own meals.
