It sounds like a sportscar model — a cardiotachometer option. Rather than the hottest thing on the road, it specializes in maternal and fetal monitoring.
When the Dodson twins were born at CMH in May, Dr. Declan Burke used this special piece of equipment to monitor the babies in the womb and the mother’s contractions during labor.
With this machine, the only one in our region, Dr. Burke received a simultaneous readout of both babies’ heartbeats on the same tape and a second readout of the mother’s contractions.
’’These tapes gave me valuable current information on all three through labor and delivery,” says Dr. Burke.
Prior to this machine, two fetal monitors were used during the birth of twins. The new equipment gives a more accurate reading of two babies, and distinguishes between them. One lead on the first baby gives an EKG with a heavy line; another lead gets an ultrasound of the second baby; and the third lead monitors the mother’s contractions.
Without the extra lead, this equipment is also used to monitor mothers during the birth of one child.
