These are just a few of the changes that have taken place at CMH recently. Patient response to the new Birthing Room has been overwhelmingly positive, and the nurses agree that it is a nice alternative to conventional delivery because the patient does not have to move from labor room to delivery room. It is also a more private and intimate place for parents to greet their new baby. The pretty wallpaper, lacy curtains, and homelike furnishings make the room cozy; while the common-sense technology of the special “borning bed” makes delivery easier and more comfortable.
After the new baby arrives, the nurses instruct bewildered parents on the proper techniques of newborn care.
"We try to teach them to do as much as possible for their infant’s care ... things like feeding, changing diapers, bathing, and cord and circumcision care,” says Myers. “We follow up with breastfeeding moms and with infants who were born prematurely or who have had problems. We let our patients know that there is always someone here they can call, dayor night, if they have questions or problems.
A celebration is in order when the new family is ready to set out on their own. "Dinner at the Stork Club,” CMH’s complimentary sendoff for new parents, features a special steak dinner for two, complete with wine, candlelight, and perhaps best of all, free babysitting.
Many new friendships are forged here. The Maternal/Child Health nurses’ station is decorated with flowers from former patients, pictures of toddlers who were born at CMH show up in the mail, and mothers bring their babies by to show the nurses how much they have grown.
”1 look forward to having my baby here and having my co-workers help me. I feel very open and comfortable with them,” says DeJarnette. “I would much rather have my baby at CMH with my co-workers because I trust them and know I will receive the best possible care. I like having them around for support."
