A summer camp for children “died aborning” last weekend in the face of overwhelming opposition from Harris Hollow residents.
A1 Sleucher told the Rappahannock Planning Commissioners at last Wednesday’s meeting of his plans to run an eightweek summer camp for between 50 and 60 youngsters at the old ski area in Harris Hollow. Mr. Sleucher, a budget analyst with the Pentagon, was there only to inquire; he had not actually applied for the necessary zoning permits.
The land in question has gone through several transformations since it was last used as a ski area, with as many as 3,000 visitors on snowy weekends in the late 1960s. Most of the 300-plus acre tract, which was once zoned commercial in its entirety, has been rezoned to conservation or agri- cultural. Only 50 acres - one 25-acre parcel with the ski lodge and another 25-acre parcel with a three-bedroom cottage - retain any commercial designation. Just how much is unclear since the zoning administrator can’t determine exactly where the commercial line runs on the zoning map. Those two pieces Mr. Sleucher hoped to lease with an option to buy for the summer camp.
