Recently, as I sat on a rock waiting on a big buck to show up, I started thinking. Thinking about the small animals and birds has probably been one of the reasons I have retained some degree of sanity as I spent those thousands and thousands of fruitless hours in the woods waiting on that elusive buck.

I have learned that, in order to pass those hours on a deerstand without pulling out my hair, I would have to eryoy the big picture. I began to watch the antics of the small animals, and the social habits of the birds. Animals are really super entertainers, and can make any time spent in the woods a real pleasure.

Some of my favorite things in life are: growing things, green things, and trees.

Trees remind me of people, both in their shape and their personality.

Pines are like ordinary people, country folks, nothing special, just solid, honest, reliable, always there when you need them.

Oaks are the stout-hearted, courageous, hanging in there in some places that nothing else could grow in, somewhat like stockbrokers.

Hickories and green ash are hearty stock, prolific and powerful. Growing in a small crack in a rock cliff, they will first split wide the rock with their growing roots, then bind it all together to preserve their own destiny. I guess hickories are a lot like lawyers and real estate agents.
