drinking. Putting up bail after an arrest, calling in sick for the alcoholic (or a co-worker’s excusing the “flu” on Mondays), cleaning up if he gets sick from drinking - these are examples of actions which “enable” the alcoholic to continue the pattern of drinking.
As the alcoholic continues drinking, Mr. Treanor said, his reliance on the “enablers” to cover up and excuse the problems created by his disease increases. For that reason, the alcoholic is usually the last person to realize that he has a problem. Mr. Treanor added that the family is the next to last to recognize the seriousness of the problem.
Statistics indicate that, on average, an alcoholic drinks for seven years before the family recognizes the situation.
