The rich tradition and quaint charm of historic Washington, Virginia will come to life on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 6 and 7, with candlelit tours, open houses at the village’s shops and bed and breakfasts, formal and informal dancing in the style of the period at the galleries, a variety of crafts demonstrations and displays, and colonial meals at the local restaurants. Entertainment and tours are free to the public.
First person “character” tours and historic tours of the art and architecture of the town will take visitors through the streets laid out by President Washington himself, albeit as a young surveyor in 1749. Beginning at noon each day, the tours will leave every hour, concluding with candlelit tours through the gaily decorated streets during the evening hours. Strolling caroilers will reawaken fond memories of country Christmases past - perhaps even for those for whom such memories are only a fantasy!
Throughout the village, nationally-known professional crafters will be demonstrating and displaying their art. Demonstrations will include a variety of quilting techniques, wreathmaking, silver- and goldsmithing, linoleum blockprinting and illustration, decorative painting, graining and marbling on wood, decorative painting on pottery, gold gilding, antique restoration, caning, gingerbread house construction, and restoration and reproduction of traditional lighting.
