. . the disposal of solid waste in landfills is the least acceptable solution to the problem of solid waste management. Therefore, RLEP urges the Board of Supervisors to continue to study and explore more environmentally sensitive alternatives.
“. . . RLEP urges the Board of Supervisors to rigorously apply the criteria for landfill siting that has been previously recommended to them by its Solid Waste Management Advisory Committee. These criteria should be applied to all suitable sites and fully evaluated before a final selection decision is made. Further, the results of all such comparative studies should be made public through the local media so that the citizens of the county can be shown that the final choice is environmentally responsible, and the product of sound, deliberate reasoning.”
The board of directors issued a statement following the meeting which reaffirmed the purposes for which the organization was founded and said that “true to (its) goals of protecting the environment, and in support of the careful use of our natural resources and scenic beauty, RLEP has continued to respond to the challenges of uncontrolled growth, inappropriate land usage, and possible water contamination.”
The league also announced that it will hold a public meeting on Monday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the library “to discuss the long-range objectives and to identify goals as well as possible threats to our county’s well-being.”
