The idea has appeal because it minimizes new construction and there are numerous outfits that erect these structures quickly and at a low cost per foot (referring to the pre-engineered metal gymnasium first proposed but later abandoned at the Board of Supervisors’ direction). However, I will not jump until we have defined the landing, regardless of how long this is considered overdue. I will avoid doing county business in a hurry as I would want to be just as proud of my decision 10 years from now.”
As to building to meet needs for the coming 10 years, as determined by census figures, Mr. Lane said: “I do not feel the census mandates this request. I feel it is due to the quality of our teaching environment. I clearly see the need for improvement, but I would not tie it to a census.”
Hubert Gilkey, who was running unopposed to retain his seat from Wakefield District, balked at supporting the total list of educational goals proposed by the citizens’ group. However, he gave unqualified backing to proceeding with the cost assessment on building at the high school and the application for a literary loan. “I support addition to the high school to meet the census for the next 10 years,” Mr. Gilkey added!
