“If you’re not pressed for time, it would be much more convenient for you to apply under the new ordinance,” Chairman A. Y. Stokes advised Mr. Sleucher. “It would be much more difficult to get through the rezcning hurdle (under the existing regulations).”
Sam Snead, one of the owners of the property, asked if the prospective camp operator could submit an application for a special exception permit to the Planning Commission next month under the new ordinance.
“If the supervisors pass (the new zoning regulations) on Dec. 1, conceivably the Planning Commission could hear the application at its meeting on Dec. 17,” Mr. McCarthy replied. “But there may not be enough time” to complete the site plan and other requirements, he said, adding that Mr. Sleucher may have to wait until January to be heard by the commission.
“Okay, I’ll do that,” the Falls Church resident answered, agreeing to meet with the zoning administrator to learn exactly what must be included in an application for a special exception permit.
That was on Wednesday; by Monday morning, Mr. Sleucher had abandoned any plans for a summer camp in Rappahannock County and was looking for property elsewhere.
“We had a meeting with Harris Hollow residents over the weekend and the response was very, very negative,” Mr. Snead reported. “John Clark (the Planning Commission representative from Hampton District and a Harris Hollow landowner himself) says it’s 180 degrees away from what the comprehensive plan calls for, and that’s his Bible.” Other residents, including Juanita Miko, Henry Gorfein, Gene Leggett and the DeBerghs, were even more adamant in their opposition, he added.
“I won’t be going any further,” Mr. Sleucher confirmed. “They don’t want ANYTHING up there.”
