To the editor:
I was delighted to read Miss Karen M. Ludwick’s letter to the editor of Nov. 20 from the University of Charleston, regarding high school expansion plans here. While on the School Board I urged my colleagues to get the School Administrators to send out questionnaires to H.S. graduates in college on a periodic basis to obtain their comments concerning the adequacy of our H.S. instruction to prepare them for college. Regretfully nothing, so far as I know, has yet come of my suggestion. Unfortunately, few of Rappahannock’s few college students have Karen’s initiative to volunteer their comments publicly. I agree with some of Karen’s comments; with some I have problems:
First, items on which Karen and I seem to agree:
!•) Adequate laboratory facilities for science courses.
I’ve already expressed my agreement in my Oct. 30 letter.
2. ) Expansion of cafeteria facilities for student lunches.
If the School Board presents publicly the specific facts to justify this expansion, I would favor it. I certainly would be against extra space for cafeteria student breakfasts as the former Superintendent told me at our first meeting he was ready to propose to the Board. My personal rejection of that idea was unequivocal, for obvious reasons, and Dr. Bloomer never proposed it to Board members - at least, not in my presence.
3. ) Upgrading locker showers and hallway toilets.
No problem. We simply need the School Board’s justification with specific numbers. And, if justified, that’s it.
