After 16 years of service to the community through his leadership of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection, which he founded, R. Phillip Irwin retired as president of the league at a recent meeting of the board of directors.
Mr. Irwin said that he had held the post of president far longer than he had intended, and enthusiastically endorsed the board of directors’ choice of David Chuse to succeed him as president.
Mr. Chuse, who has served as the editor of RLEP’s newsletter and is currently the president of the Conservation Council of Virginia, has long been an advocate of the goals which RLEP has been attempting to achieve. He moved to Rappahannock County in 1980 with his wife, Pat, from their native state of California.
Other officers elected at the board’s meeting were Mitzie Young, vice-president; Pat Fillebrown, secretary; Sue Lane, membership director, and Phil Irwin, treasurer. In addition to RLEP’s officers, members of the board of directors are Lynne Baines, Hugh Chrisman, Bob Dennis, Maurice Herndon, Howdy Holschuh, Allen Olson, Delbert Price and Frank Reynolds.
The board of directors also passed a resolution at the meeting concerning the county’s search for a new landfill site. The resolution read, in part: “RLEP supports a process which gives cautious and serious consideration to all foreseeable factors that may adversely affect the natural beauty and healthful attributes of the county that are so prized by all its citizens.
