The people who stand up on this today, who work and educate to bring understanding of it may well be more important across the pages of history to be written during the last part of this century than all of the past captains of industry, presidents and apostles of economic growth put together. If there is a new breed of men to be found today, they will be the leaders, indeed the tough militant fighters in the task of mastering man’s current hell-bent drive, born only in well-intended greed and ignorance, to destroy his own living environment.
This is at issue today here in this still largely rural Virginia county, whose hills, woodlands and remaining farms are a major generator of the water, air and food supply of the Washington Region. And whose county political leadership, with the continuing firm support of this newspaper, is making the wise, tough decisions against unwise urban sprawl to preserve these irreplaceable
natural resources. The ignorant ignore that only at the peril of their legacy. Losses in all the wars in human history are small by comparison with the price of losing this one. We have now engaged the battle for a future which may lie beyond our vision but which does not lie entirely beyond our control.
