“One thing all alcoholics have in common is serious life problems,” substance abuse expert Bob Treanor said. “If alcohol is causing serious life problems and you continue to drink - that is a problem.”

If you know someone with a substance abuse problem, there are agencies in the area which can help. Mr. Treanor stressed that whether or not the abuser is willing to seek help, it is vital that those affected by his abuse get counseling in how to deal with the problem.

The following agencies, both public and private, are staffed with experts in substance abuse:

• Family Guidance Services/Community Mental Health: Units in five counties. All have 24-hour hotline numbers. The hotline is staffed nights, weekends and holidays. (All numbers are area code 703.):

Culpeper: 825-5656

Fauquier: 347-7620

Madison: 948-5911

Orange: 672-2718

Rappahannock: 675-3329

FGS/CMH also operates a Substance Abuse Services office in Culpeper (825-4242).
