Carp solve

weed troubles

Virginia pond owners with water weed problems can now import and stock triploid (sterile) Chinese grass carp (white amur). This fish is reported to be an effective water weed eater, consuming rooted water weeds and filamentous algae.

The recommended stocking rate is 12 fish (9 to 12 inches in length) per surface area. Ponds with very dense water weed growths may require more fish.

Only triploid (sterile fish with 50 percent more chromosomes than normal) grass carp certified as such from an approved supplier are per'mitted for import. It is illegal to import diploid (fertile fish with the normal number of chromosomes) into Virginia. This restriction is intended to protect our native sport fish from competition with this exotic species.

Virginia Approved Suppliers of triploid grass carp are: J.M. Malone & Son, P.O. Box 158, Lonoke, Arkansas 72086, (501)676-2800 or 6766554; Leon Hill Farms, Route 2, Lb- ) moke, Arkansas 72086, (501)676-2435 or 676-6629. i
