Question: Salaries for both beginning and experienced teachers in Rappahannock County are the lowest in the area, despite raises that have averaged 10 percent over the past three years. The coming year will be the first time in three years that the state will not make extra fbiancial aid available to school divisions that give teachers sala ry increases of at least 10 percent. Given those facts and last year’s real estate tax hike of 11 cents per $100 of assessed value (which goes primarily for solid waste disposal), if you were facing a tax increase of four cents in 1988-89 to meet budgetary de?nands and the county’s accountant advised that the 10 percent raise proposed for teachers was the only thing you could cut to reduce that rate, what would you do, assuming your constituents were split on the issue?

We don’t seem to have trouble getting new teachers, but we have a problem keeping the teachers we already have ...
