To the editor:
Virginia voters will make a terrible mistake if they vote on Nov. 3 to have a state sponsored lottery.
Former Governors Charles Robb and Mills E. Godwin (as well as the late Linwood Holton) all oppose the idea of a lottery for which there will no doubt be much favorable support between now and election day.
We don’t need a lottery in Virginia.
Friends from Maryland, a lottery state, tell me “. . . it doesn’t do what sponsors claimed it would; it has not meant extra money for our schools.”
We have also been told that the poorest third of all Maryland families buy 60 percent of all lottery tickets every day. In effect, the lottery imposes an additional tax on those who can least afford it. Thousands spent for lottery tickets by those who cannot afford to lose money will not result in better clothed, better fed, or better educated people.
