The sheriff, who is also the chief of the Castleton VFD, said that he felt that considering the distance involved, fire apparatus had arrived on the scene “pretty quickly.” The call was received and companies alerted at 10:41 p.m. The first unit responded from Amissville at 10:45 and arrived on the scene at 10:54. Additional fire and rescue equipment from Amissville, Castleton and Washington Volunteer Fire Departments also responded.
“As far as the firefighting operation went,” Chief Poling said, “there were no problems. The firefighters did all they could.”
Rappahannock Social Services Director Sylvia Kreitler said that her office is coordinating donations for the Sheetz family. All their possessions were destroyed in the fire, and Mrs. Kreitler said that any donations of food, clothing, furniture, linens and towels or appliances would be welcomed. “They basically have to furnish an entire house,” she said.
