Sheriff Woodward said that the fire damaged the structure too badly to tell whether there were smoke detectors in the home. He added that State Police Special Agent W. D. Spence had investigated the scene on Saturday, but that there was no suspicion of arson or foul play. “It was just a precaution, to make sure we had covered all the bases,” he said.
Special Agent Spence said Tuesday that his preliminary investigation had concluded that the fire was accidental. Although the investigation is continuing, he said, “in the absence of any other evidence we will close the case with a finding that the fire was accidental.” He declined to discuss a specific cause.
