The effect is powerful and seductive, but there remains the frustration of being given the elements of a mystery without any hope of ever unravelling it. The special mix of realities that every life represents is ultimately knowable, if knowable at all, only to that single life. All these images find their integration in the single mind of Sally Nash. It’s as if we were being asked to find our way in someone else’s dream. Is the man in the painting her husband? Her grandfather? Her father? A friend? Is the girl her daughter, or herself as a young girl? And where does the toy leopard come in? And the serpent? The mind reels with the possibilities, and the impact of the painting is scattered and dispersed over too great an area to evoke a concentrated response. Still, there is enchantment there and some hidden truths about the way our brains operate.
