He lived on the Eastern Shore when Hurricane Gloria whipped through. The school’s communication system was one of two working systems in the area.
There are a lot of positive points to providing buses with radios so communication can be made with the central office. Some advantages include: (1) providing communication with a field trip bus driver about an early return or other concerns; (2) enabling the central office to have communication with the Piedmont bus during its trip to Culpeper twice daily: (3) communicating road conditions during a flood or snow emergency; (4) summoning help for a bus in need more promptly; (5) the Superintendent could communicate conditions of roads on questionable bad weather days more easily, allowing an earlier notice of school closings; and (6) buses would have the capability of calling in other emergency situations that they encounter on a route other than their own.
