Again, the coach praised the teamwork showed by his players. “Without a lot of help from the team, we would not have had all those shots on goal. I had to look to my veterans for support, and they came through.”
He noted that Doug Smith, playing at middle fullback, provided a Strength “which we vitally needed throughout the game.”
And, for Andrew Ball and Greg Smith, the goals were their first of the season, “and both well overdue.” Ball played both wings before Coach Currie switched him into the middle, while accurate passing by- his teammates allowed Greg Smith to take a dozen shots on goal. “Everyone assisted well; Greg had good feeds from the entire team. Without that help, he would not have had those shots,” the coach said.
Exchange student Daniel Cremers w'as also a standout, Coach Currie said. “Again, he was where I needed him, feeding the offense for shots on goal.”
On Monday, Oct. 19, the Panthers face George Mason at RCHS. Rappahannock lost the first outing, but Coach Currie said he hoped for a brighter outcome this time. “I expect a tough game, but ^e’re at home and we’re going to show them what we have here.” Wakefield tops R-MA
After taking care of the Rappahannock Panthers for Homecoming, Wakefield journeyed to Front Royal Monday to face Randolph-Macon Academy. In a hard-fought, tight game which went into overtime, the match ended in a 2-2 tie.
Carlos Martinez-Fontana and Chris Adamson provided the two Wakefield tallies.
This weekend, Wakefield’s varsity team will travel to Petersburg for the St. Vincent de Paul Invitational Soccer Tournament. In their first match of the tourney, the Owls are pitted against Bishop Ireton School of Alexandria, ranked fifth in the state of Virginia.
