And, he said, the RCHS JV pulled off the victory while missing two of the team’s top players. Edna Shanks missed the game with a pulled hamstring, while Jennifer Pullen was sidelined with a head injury.
With 44 percent shooting from the free-throw line, and the scoring evenly distributed, Coach Vickers was understandably pleased with his team’s performance. “Everybody played, and played a very aggressive defense. We made George Mason turn the ball over. I was real proud of the girls tonight; they did well and proved that we have a wellrounded team.”
On offense, the Panthers all put some shots in the hoop, with Sarah Bartlett again capturing high scoring honors with eight. Gail Hitt followed with six points, Jennifer Fox with four, Susan Estes with three, Tasha Roy and Gwen Bright sunk two each, and Beth Conover contributed one point.
Defensive standouts, said Coach Vickers, included top rebounder Tasha Roy, Beth Conover and point guard Crystal Jenkins, playing in that slot for the first time. “She did an excellent job. And Beth always plays a good defensive game.”
The win Tuesday brings the Panther JV record to 5-6 in the Bull Run District and 5-8 overall. That record, Coach Vickers said, should earn the team a berth in the quarterfinal round of the district championships. He expressed pleasure at the team’s performances so far. “It’s a rebuilding year, and we’re doing what we should. Everybody’s playing and getting some experience.”
The Rappahannock Varsity girls basketball squad lost its game Tuesday against George Mason, 45-25. Mr. Vickers said that the Panthers took a lot of shots but failed to connect with the basket. No other details were available from that game.
