Chase: Miller
broke promise
State Senate candidate William C. Chase Jr. charged Tuesday that incumbent Sen. Kevin Miller has failed to honor a commitment made during his campaign which Mr. Chase said reveals his lack of responsiveness to his constituents.
Mr. Chase said that one of Sen. Miller’s campaign flyers, circulated during his 1983 run for the Senate, promises that he would visit locally and meet with constituents on a monthly basis. Mr. Chase produced a copy of the 1983 letter, signed by Mr. Miller, in which he says, “If elected, I will hold announced monthly visitations to the counties of Fauquier, Culpeper, Madison, Rappahannock and Page. ”
Mr. Chase charged, “He hasn’t even come close to that. Many of our people say that they only see him every fourth year around election time.”
For example, Mr. Chase said, a representative for Mr. Miller has maintained in a letter to local newspapers that Sen. Miller held a meeting in Culpeper County each year before the General Assembly session. The challenger noted that this admission, by the Miller campaign, means that Sen. Miller officially visits the county on ah announced basis one-twelfth as often as he promised.
“Responsiveness is a major reason why I got into this race,” Mr. Chase affirmed. “I believe that our state senator should go to the people, not make the people come to him.”
Unlike Sen. Miller, Mr. Chase said that he will maintain legislative offices in Culpeper and Harrisortburg so constituents can more easily call or visit him.
