Through a complicated network of neural feedback mechanisms we human beings can feel and monitor all our muscular movements, including those involved with speaking and breathing. We feel ourselves move and talk and walk, but we do not feel ourselves think. There’s a kind of silence that surrounds the things of the mind and Robin Purnell has uncannily captured this feature of mental life in her painting.
