Alternative I would merely eliminate the west bound lane of the divided highway for a savings of $1.7 million. The scaled down version would reduce the right-of-way width by 38 feet, reduce grading by 23 percent, and delete 32 acres of topsoil, according to the study.
Alternative II would retain the present two-lane 'design but widen the pavement to 24 feet and widen the shoulders to an eight foot cut and 11 foot fill. It would require the acquisition of approximately 20 feet of right-of-way beyond what VDOT currently holds. The cost: $1.4 million, a savings of 85 percent over the original proposal.
