In any event, the State Board of Education directed this spring that by June 30, 1991, all “Pre-DOT” buses must be gone from school bus fleets, and in the interim, school divisions must submit plans for replacing the buses of this vintage, with the documents due in Richmond this month.
Currently, Rappahannock has three “Pre-DOT” buses: a 1975 International with 41,527 miles driven by Frank Parker on the regular run through Laurel Mills and two spares, a 1976 International with 133,687 miles and a 1970 Chevrolet with 135,736 miles.
The School Board purchased two replacement buses through this year’s budget. Delivery of the new vehicles, scheduled for November, will mean the sale of the current “Pre-DOT” spares and the relocation of the remaining bus to spare status, according to Superintendent David Gangel. “The replacement cycle during the 1989-90 school year will remove the final “Pre-DOT” spare bus from the Rappahannock fleet,” bringing the division into compliance with the replacement regulation one year prior to the deadline, Dr. Gangel noted in the plan submitj^d to the state’s associate director for pupil transportation service.
