To the editor:
All Americans should be made aware that the nomination of Richard Thornburgh, former governor of Pennsylvania, to be the attorney general of the United States poses a serious threat to the Constitution of the United States.
Gov. Thornburgh is a director of the Committee on the Constitutional System,a group working to bring about a Constitutional convention. Thirty-four states are required to call a Constitutional convention, and as of January this year 32 states, including Virginia, had made such calls.
The Convention is being sold under the false premise of being called for the “exclusive purpose” of passing a balanced budget amendment to the Constitutuion. But the real purpose of the CCS is to make radical changes to the Constitution.
The proposals of the CCS would abolish the “separation of powers,” which is the cornerstone of our system of government. This would be done by changing the election process so that a voter can only vote for a party slate, not individual candidates; and by giving the President the power to appoint additional members to the House and Senate.
In my opinion, this would give the President of the United States so much power and influence that he could easily become a dictator.
Since a Constitutional convention is a sovereign body, it is not restrained by any limitations of resolutions passed by the states that creted the convention. In fact, the convention can even specify the
