To the editor:
A couple of times before we’ve written laudatory letters to the Rappahannock News about the residents of this county, but even so, we feel that still another one is in order this year.
As the nearest possible neighbors to the park we’ve watched its use increase every one of the several years since it was upgraded from the Rec Center to the County Park. The pavilion seems to be reserved every Sunday and sometimes Saturday, too, for some sort of gathering. The tennis courts have their players at 7 o’clock in the morning and at 8 o’clock in the evening — but, not surprisingly, seldom during the sweltering midday hours; the basketball court is busy every afternoon until pitch dark; the swings and slide and other tot-used equipment are in use at any hour of any day. Since the volleyball court was moved to near the highway its use is a sometime thing (what has happened to the young adults who used to be regulars there?), and only the occasional family reunion group uses the horseshoe pitch.
As one would expect, by far the most-used portion of the park is the basketball court. Every afternoon unless it’s pouring rain it’s in use by everybody from kids who can’t throw their soccer-sized balls halfway up to the basket all the way to very adult types who clearly show the result of not pushing themselves away from the table sooner, and all ages in between. Both sexes. Both races. And they all play together so well that one can’t help being proud
