The only precedent we have is the convention of 1787, and it exceeded its instructions to “revise” the Articles of Confederation. That convention gave us our present Constitution, which is the greatest document ever produced by men to govern themselves. How can anyone think today’s politicans could improve that great document?
This year the Virginia House of Delegates passed House Joint Resolution 28 to withdraw Virginia’s vote for a convention. The Senate Rules Committee, however, refused to pass the bill out to the Senate floor. Instead, the bill was carried over to the 1989 session.
If we are to save our Constitution, Virginians must contact their senators before the 1989 session and demand that the Rules Committee and the Senate pass HJR 28.
The Committee to Preserve the Constitution is a state-wide organization whose sole objective is to save our Constitution. The public is invited to the next meeting to be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18 at Hillwood Camping Park in Gainesville.
