rom a business standpoint, it will be an inconvenience to my customers. From a personal standpoint, I would like to park my car in front of my house. And from an aesthetic viewpoint, when we litter the town with signs, it provides an unwelcome sight to tourists whom we try to welcome to this town.
Camille Harris, who is chairman of the council-appointed committee which has met with the highway department and Sheriffs Department in the past to convey complaints about speeding, suggested that it is time to convene the committee again.
“How about hiring a town constable?” Jim Thomasson suggested.
Mr. Reynolds seconded the suggestion that enforcement is the remedy called for. “It’s not the tourists doing the speeding,” he said. “It’s the locals. The word of a few speeding tickets will get around.”
Mr. Skowronski agreed, but pointed out that the Sheriffs Department has the responsibility to patrol the entire county, and not just the streets of Washington. With limited resources, deputies can’t patrol the town all the time, he said.
The council requested that Mr. Reynolds look into the legislative authority of the town to hire a constable.
