Kim Sigler finds that her singing ability will open doors, but there are laws which still keep some closed to her. “A curfew for children may bar the nine-year-old vocalist from appearing in nightclubs, but her talent has earned her a spot at the craft festival,” said Roger Rutherford, one of the organizers of this weekend’s craft and music festival in Sperryville.
The event, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 20 and 21, will feature live music both days, and a number of games and other entertainment. “We’re planning this as a family affair,” Mr. Rutherford said. “We’d like people to bring the entire family out the eiyoy it.”
The festival is being sponsored by the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department and the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad, and the proceeds will benefit the two organizations.
A Fredericksburg resident, Miss Sigler has been performing for more than a year. She lends her vocal tal’ ents to a number of country and ' western bands in appearances throughout Northern Virginia.
Miss Sigler said that she first be• came interested in singing when she listened to Patsy Cline on the radio. Then seven years old, her father bought her a tape of the famous singer and Miss Sigler wrote down the words to the songs she heard. J’hen she watched “Sweet Dreams,” the recent movie about the singer’s life.
“I told my dad I wanted to sing like Patsy Cline,” Miss Sigler recalled. With her parents supporting' her interest all the way, the young girl learned Patsy Cline’s songs by singing along with tapes in her bedroom at night.
Practicing as often as three times ‘ a week, Miss Sigler soon found that she enjoyed the experience. “Singing makes me feel good about my:self,” she said.
Though she has expanded her repertoire to include other country artists including Kitty Wells and Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline remains Miss Sigler’s favorite singer.
