The present situation is intolerable. Last week, one of the residents in the audience had cancelled another engagement in order to be at the meeting to offer an opinion about the proposed changes.
In this newspaper, we speak often about the need for people to get involved in government. We find that local officials share a similar lament: that too often no one shows up to speak either for or against a proposal.
But when people attempt to participate and are frustrated because the members of an appointed board fail to appear for a scheduled hearing, it’s easy to understand their anger and frustration.
And we’ve got to agree with them. And we also sympathize with the frustrations of the planners who do appear regularly, who have read up on the matters to be discussed and are ready to fulfill their responsibilities.
For the sake of the town’s residents — and in fairness to their fellow members — those planning commissioners who are unable or unwilling to attend meetings should resign their posts. There are others in the town who are willing to step in and serve. They deserve a chance to do it.
