Following up on the complaints of town residents, who call Centel’s telephone service “two tin cans and a string,” Mayor Dean Morehouse met with representatives of the utility last Wednesday. “We told them about the tin cans, and that the string is broken,” Mr. Morehouse told the council at its meeting Aug. 10.

He said that he relayed the complaints, which have included cutoffs, interruptions due to electrical storms and dampness, cutins onto other parties’ conversations and people whose phones have been out of service for extended periods without explanation.

The mayor said that the company’s representatives told him that “quite a bit of new equipment will be installed within the next two weeks.” It will include tripling the number of selectors, which switch incoming calls, from 10 to 30. Mr. Morehouse added that the Centel officials told him that the ‘675’ exchange is scheduled for an upgrade to electronic switching in 1989.

“The only way that they can fix it is to have the information,” Mr. Morehouse added. He suggested that anyone who has a service problem call the company and complain.
