tion to the plan, saying that in his years of living on the block the cars parked along the street have been the only thing slowing the speeding motorists who drive Main St. “It has been a dragstrip. There’s been very little change in 12 years. There have been lots of conversations, many ideas —many ridiculous, many illegal —but nothing has worked.
“The only thing that worked to slow people down is when the parked cars began to create congestion,” Mr. Eldred told the council. He added that, as a merchant with a business in that block, he is also opposed to a parking ban “as a legitimate commercial concern. ”
Councilman Peter Skowronski, who supports the parking ban, suggested that congesting the street with parked cars is not the way to address the speeding problem. He added that there was no proposal to ban parking on Mr. Eldred’s side of the street.
“If we can get the speeding problem under control, then I am willing to listen,” Mr. Eldred replied. “But not until then.”
Reinhardt Lynch added that he too is opposed to the parking restrictions. Mr. Lynch is co-owner of The Inn at Little Washington, and lives on the other end of the block opposite the Washington Cash Store.
