9, along with the plan for Rappahannock’s remediation program and the requirement that all qualifying youngsters participate, includes $2,000 for supplemental reading and all math remedial materials for the high school, $750 for California Achievement Tests, and $3,456 for the two teachers who will teach the after-school classes.
While fully supporting the state’s position that “all youngsters who are behind ought to be brought up to par,” Mr. Chappell said that implementation and funding could be difficult in the first year.
“And I predict that the requirement that people take remedial classes will be a problem,” he added.
“Personally, I’m pleased to see the state taking a strong position on this,” said Superintendent David Gangel. “We certainly need to be giving students the skills and resources they need to be successful.”
Litter budget $1.2M
The Virginia Division of Litter Control began operating in 1977. It is funded solely by special taxes levied on business and industry, which raise about $1.2 million annually.
