turn Monday morning, followed by a telephone call from Centel later that day.

Mr. Morehouse said that he had also inquired about the possibility of extending the ‘675’ exchange’s local calling area to include one nearby town, Culpeper, Warrenton or Front Royal. That, the company told him, would require a petition requesting the service signed by five percent of the users, or about 45 people.

That would trigger a request from the SCC to poll the members of the exchange — on both ends — to see if they are interested in paying the additional charges if the service area is extended. If 50 percent of the users agree, the Extended Service Area would be implemented.

Because the respondents in Warrenton, Culpeper or Front Royal are unlikely to request the service area, Mr. Morehouse said, since they have little need to call Washington, Va., the proposal is almost certainly doomed to failure, Mr. Morehouse said.

“I think that they are really trying” to provide better service, Mr. Morehouse added.

“I agree,” said Fran Eldred. “I think that they are very trying.”

Charlie Eldred said, “I think that they are at this point. They are realizing that we are sick and tired of this inadequate service.”

What about emergency service, Mr. Eldred added. “Is the company liable for negligence if someone is ill or hurt and can’t get help? There are a lot of elderly people in town. ”

Parking restrictions opposed

A proposal from the council to ban parking along North Main St. between The Inn and Calvert St. on the east side met with opposition from the residents present last Wednesday.

Council secretary Ray Gooch reported that the Virginia Department of Transportation had furnished a diagram with the locations of the proposed “No Parking” signs. The request had been made after residents complained about the difficulty of traffic maneuvering in that block.
