Hunter safety class

With big game season fast approaching, Game Warden Jim Bankston reminds residents that all first-time hunters and all hunters 16 years of age or younger, are required to present certification of completion of a Virginia Game Commission hunter education course before a hunting license will be issued. A class will be held at the Flint Hill fire hall on Oct. 17,18, and 19, from 6-9:30 p.m. There is no charge for the course, but participants must attend all three nights to earn a certificate of completion. Fall color watch

The latest prediction for peak leaf color is the last two weeks in October. Experts caution that the prediction is subject to change based on nighttime temperatures and rainfall. Poplars have begun to turn, accounting for the scattered yellows seen on the mountainsides. Some maple trees at higher elevations have also begun to turn red at the crown, however, most of the slopes are still green.
