How many of our Rappahannock County supervisors and planners who are so opposed to permitting families giving a few acres to family members, and who are themselves large landowners, would be willing to turn down a lucrative offer for their land and maybe retire to Florida, Arizona, California or some other haven in the sun? I’ve noticed in recent weeks one supervisor has sold off hundreds of acres of his family’s corporation-owned Rappahannock County holdings. I’m sure the hundreds of thousands of dollars received for the properties are not distressed sales. Another exsupervisor recently received county approval to consolidate some probably unbuildable lots into buildable lots that were listed in The Washington Post a few days later for $30,000 each. Definitely not the $5,000 lots that he had recently stated were so plentiful in Rappahannock County.
Why should Rappahannock County shirk its responsibility and force its younger and older citizens to move out of the county and become part of another community’s responsibility? Let them have a family lot to build on as Virginia law wisely permits.
