Rappahannock’s community spirit has once again been recognized, this time by the Rappahannock-Rapidan Emergency Medical Services Council.
The council, which oversees EMS in the five counties of Planning District 9, bestowed three of its annual awards on county residents. Rick Johnson of Woodville, captain of the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad, was honored as the Squadsman of the Year; Chief Roger Roach of Washington’s Volunteer Fire Department received recognition as Instructor of the Year; and Randolph Clater, owner of Sperryville’s Comer Store was recognized for his assistance to EMS as the council’s Citizen of the Year.
Capt. Johnson: He appears where the action is
A squad member who appears where the action is!” was the introduction given to Rick Johnson’s award. In January, he responded from his home in Woodville to a one-vehicle accident on Route 522 near the Rappahannock/Culpeper county line, arriving as the first trained volunteer on the scene.
A young woman was pinned under a pickup truck. Capt. Johnson helped extricate her and found she was not breathing. He began cardio-pulmon&ry resuscitation while waiting for a rescue squad to arrive.
After a squad arrived, they continued CPR while Capt. Johnson directed preparations for transport After Washington’s Medic I unit reached the scene, the young woman was loaded aboard for the trip to Culpeper Memorial Hospital.
