theRappahar "" Geography B where students answered oral questions about geography, is the first step in national competition for a $25,000 college scholarship sponsored by the National Geographic Society's World magazine for children. The school winners, including Derek, have taken a written exam, and 100 of the high scorers will participate in a state Geography Bee in Richmond on April 7. The top five will then advance to the national competition for the scholarship. The Society developed the Gepgfaphy Bee, according to a spokesman, in response to a growing concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young Americans. In Geographic survey conducted last year in nine countries, ■ American children scored the lowest on the -'test.
