Of Virginia s 132 school divisions, 78 have instituted the seven period schedule at the secondary level, and of the remaining 54, 17 divisions offer seven periods at the middle school level.
In other action at the January School Board meeting Dr. Gangel reported on the establishment of the Superintendent’s Super Stars, a new program that recognizes effort. For example, the student who “works hard and moves from a “C” to a “B” doesn’t have the grades to make the honor roll but could qualify as a Superintendent’s Super Star. These youngsters, who will be identified by their teachers for each marking period, will receive a “Super Star” button and be Dr. Gangel’s guests at a luncheon within the school. In addition, letters of congratulations applauding the students’ “exemplary effort and hard work” will be sent home to parents.
He also told the board that he is exploring possibilities for joint course offerings with Lord Fairfax Community College which would allow Rappahannock high school students to meet requirements for graduation while simultaneously earning college credit. Many questions remain unanswered, however, he noted, saying he will keep the board apprised of developments.
