Education makes strides
We applaud the decisions made and steps taken by the county’s School Board at its January meeting.
The board has shown foresight in sending to the county’s Planning Commission a request for a middle school to be included in the county’s capital improvements plan. Though it’s an expensive request—an estimated $3.5 million—it will likely be needed within the next 10-15 years.
And, as Chairman Beverly Massie indicated, advance ..planning for a new school with proper facilities is infinitely preferable to housing overflow students in temporary [ trailers. Learning—and teaching—in that environment is difficult and uncomfortable for all concerned.
The cost for a new school will be a budget-breaker. However, if planning is done ahead, there may be strategies available to the county to make the cost less burdensome to its taxpayers. And, as land values skyrocket, the county would be well advised to purchase land soon, rather than wait and see the price rise dramatically higher.
The board’s approval of a seven-period day was another decision which opens new doors of opportunity for the county’s children. It will allow those high school students who ;wish to pursue advanced studies or enrichment courses to do Jso, while still ensuring that the basic core curriculum receives $he attention it deserves. /
