In 1986, Virginia increased its graduation requirements to 21 courses for a regular diploma and 23 courses for an advanced studies diploma. With the current six period day, “it’s awfully hard to work in additional courses like band, choir, art, and typing or to take vocational courses like drafting if you’re going the college preparatory route for the advanced studies diploma,” Mr. Chappell noted.
