Youngsters from Rappahannock County Elementary School took five out of the 12 prizes offered by Harrisonburg’s public television station in WPTV’s 20th anniversary poster contest.
“Five out of 12! I think that’s the kind of ratio we deserve,” said Superintendent David Gangel, as the School Board applauded the work of the student artists and their art teacher, Linda Owings.
The contest, My Favorite Program on WPTV, was opened to elementary students in grades kindergarten through fifth in the station’s broadcast area. The winners from RCES were Joshua Morris (first place, kindergarten), Keyasa Moore (first place, third grade), Amy Buckholtz (second place, first grade), Ariele Foster (second place, fourth grade), and Tamara Carter (second place, fifth grade).
But it wasn’t just ribbons that the children won. They were awarded a $25 savings account by Investers Savings Bank of Harrisonburg, and they were presented their passbooks on the air while they were interviewed for WPTV’s Short Takes series.
In addition, their winning posters will be shown between programs with the station’s call letters during the months of January and February. The children also received certificates from the TV station plus free membership in WPTV’s Kids Club, and their color posters were reproduced in miniature black-and
