Good basketball teams are always going to have an off night. Its what makes them better. And as long as the lapse doesn’t come at tournament time, coaches just hope the players keep trying, and then they work hard at straightening out problems in practice.
The Rappahannock Panthers will be practicing hard this week. They will concentrate on involving others besides Eric Dunn in the offense, according to Coach Gary Leake. He said he also wants his boys to quicken the tempo, especially on defense.
The Panthers survived all these problems Friday night against the Stonewall Jackson Generals, winning 61-51. But it took key fourth quarter performances by Julian Groves and Danny Ellis to squelch a determined effort by the 2-6 Generals.
Stonewall tied the game at eight midway through the opening period, and was threatening to take the lead when Groves rejected a shot and passed to Dunn on the break. Dunn converted on a three point play and that was as close as the Generals came the remainder of the game.
